Our Vision /

Grandview Calvary Baptist Church is a community of people who receive and extend the radical welcome of God in Christ for the transformation of our neighbourhood.

Life in Christ / Prayer
Recognizing the gift of God’s transforming welcome to us, we are a growing movement of people who have encountered the radical welcome of God in Christ. We envision a movement of people who are increasingly dependent on the directing and unifying work of the Holy Spirit through such means as weekly services of corporate worship, a shared daily liturgy, home groups, contemplative prayer, regularly scheduled days or seasons of waiting on God, healing prayer and the guidance of God in all of our activities.

Charism of welcome/evangelism
Recognizing the desire and action of God to welcome back all humans to God’s own self through Jesus, we envision a movement with an ever widening welcome of God to our neighbourhood. We see this movement of inclusive welcome into new life with Christ happening through intentional and personal encounters with those who live next door, on the block, along the street, in the park, at work or in school.

Growing into God’s story / Seeking reconciliation and justice
Recognizing the gift of God’s revelation through Christ and through the scriptures which testify to him, we see a movement where people are increasingly invited into this story, learning how to read and indwell that story themselves. We see a movement that increasingly learns how to read and evaluate the society in which we live in light of the biblical tradition, thus forming a people committed to taking stands against forces of disintegration and fear-mongering which threaten to divide and oppress. We see a movement of people committed to loving and praying for their enemies and seeking shalom within our neighbourhood.

Sharing Jesus’ vision of community, with a special eye for the least
Recognizing the radical hospitality God has extended towards all of humanity, we envision a movement of people committed to the work of radical hospitality and celebration of diversity rooted in Christ and to relationships characterized by confession, forgiveness and reconciliation. We see a movement of people made up of the rich and the poor (from neighbours who own businesses to neighbours who panhandle), the old and the young (from newborns to the dying) and men and women. We see a movement where there is greater representation of people from the different ethnic groups who make up this neighbourhood – where people from Asian and African and Latino and Aboriginal and Caucasian cultures are represented at every level of leadership and involvement. We see a movement of people who look out for the least of these among us and stand with them.

Loving the creator by caring for the creation
Recognizing that God is restoring and completing the work of creation through Christ, we see a movement that extends the welcome of God to the rest of the created world in our neighbourhood. We see a movement of people who are learning to recognize, to care for, to value the animals, the trees, the flowers, the patches of grass, the buildings, the meeting places and streets of our neighbourhood, so that we might share in the well-being, beauty and restoration of this neighbourhood.

Service
Recognizing the desire of God for his people to work together for God’s kingdom in this neighbourhood, we see the continuing initiation of programs and alternative ways of living, which members of our church or other churches take up for the good of this city.

Expansion / Christian Unity
Recognizing that the Spirit blows where it will in order to spread God’s kingdom, we envision a movement of people committed to sharing this vision first with other churches and groups in the Grandview-Woodlands area, and to extending this vision for the transformation of neighbourhoods to other parts of the city and to other parts of the world, to places where people from our church originate from or are called to.
