Across Town & Abroad /

GCBC recognizes that our vision calls us to make Christ known and celebrate God’s presence not only in our immediate neighbourhood but further afield as well. We seek to be supportive of those who take and embody the message and love of Christ to the rest of Vancouver, to the Lower Mainland, and to the uttermost parts of the earth. We are also grateful for the number of parishioners who have come from the far corners of the world, drawing our eyes to concerns beyond us.

Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM)
One way we express our commitment to mission is through our denominational affiliation. As our denomination’s national organization, CBM does mission and development work in Canada and throughout the world. Within our church, mission groups meet to discuss and promote mission involvement through CBM and other organizations and communities afar. Correspondence and prayer requests of families & individuals we support are made known through the church bulletin and bulletin boards in the classroom corridor.

El Salvador
David and Suzannah Nacho have been working in El Salvador with Emmanuel Baptist Church since October 2006. Among their main areas of ministry are:

  • Suzannah coordinates the visits from CBM volunteers. These have mainly focussed on the building projects in the city of Algeria, providing decent housing for families living in extreme poverty. Suzannah has also prepared the Sunday School curriculum for most of this year.
  • David has mostly supported the areas of Christian Education in the central congregation. He hopes to work more in the rural communities in the months to come.
  • Together, David and Suzannah have formed a youth group at the church focussing on spiritual formation, service to the community and leadership formation (and fun too).

Canadians for Reconciliation (CFR)
CFR is a peaceful non-partisan grassroots movement committed to developing a new relationship with aboriginal people, one that signifies a deep apology for past injustice, a willingness to honor truth now and a resolve to embrace each other in the new millennium. To this end, CFR organizes educational events, banquets, tours of reserves and participation in city events (such as Chinatown parades), seeking to bring together First Peoples with others, and nurture reconciling relationships.

A Rocha Canada
A Rocha is an International conservation organization working to show God’s love for Creation. Through their Field Study & Ecology Centre in South Surrey, BC and through local initiatives, A Rocha Canada has helped GCBC in a Christian mandate to understand, appreciate and steward the Creation. Several times a year GCBC’s Eco-Stewardship Committee also plans ‘Creation Outings’ that take us deeper into creation - through gardens, across watersheds, even into garbage sites! – as we learn about caring for and enjoying the world entrusted to us by God.
