During the season of Advent, the church calendar begins anew and we are invited to re-enter the story of Jesus' birth with wide-eyed wonder and hopeful anticipation. Year after year, season after season, as we embrace the holy mystery of Emmanuel--God with us--we can discover afresh the ways that Christ has been, is, and will continue to be our "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

During the first Christmas, Palestine suffered under heavy taxation, poverty, and exile in the Roman Empire. Israel was watching and waiting, listening for a king who would set things right. In the still of the night, a baby is born.

A baby is not what they expected. The birth of Jesus is like crowning a king in a whisper. It whispers that the weight is lifted. A new age is coming--a time when we live under the rule of a king who loves his creation and sacrifices himself for us.

As we still experience the long reign of sin and oppression in our world, we await the reign of our loving king in fullness. We watch and pray and prepare for the coming of Jesus, the one who is making all things new (Rev. 21:5).
